HYMN is een performatieve compositie van Fallon Mayanja, gepresenteerd op het Horst Festival in Asiat Park, Vilvoorde, in productie met The Constant Now. Vertrekkend vanuit Julius Eastmans The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc (1981) hanteert het werk de stem als persoonlijk instrument én als collectieve kracht.

 

Tien performers bouwen samen één sonisch lichaam op via herhaling, resonantie en wrijving. Lagen verschuiven, stapelen zich op, ademen samen. Luisteren wordt geen passieve handeling meer: het wordt een ruimtelijk, relationeel en politiek gebaar. Het publiek hoort HYMN niet alleen. Het maakt er deel van uit.

Het werk ontstond in een weeklang POC-only atelier op Horst onder leiding van Fallon Mayanja. Via stem, improvisatie, orale archieven en experimentele geluidspraktijk ontwikkelde elke performer een eigen vocale aanwezigheid — individuele lagen die zich geleidelijk vergrendelen tot een gedeeld, levend geluidsveld.

HYMN maakt ruimte voor zorg, intensiteit en collectieve aandacht. Het positioneert geluid niet als achtergrond of decoratie, maar als een medium dat lichamen, herinneringen en toekomsten actief met elkaar verbindt.

Taking Julius Eastman's The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc (1981) as a starting point, the work wields the voice as both a personal instrument and a collective force.

Ten performers build a single sonic body from the ground up through repetition, resonance, and friction. Layers shift, accumulate, and breathe together. Listening stops being passive: it becomes a spatial, relational, and political act. The audience doesn't just hear HYMN. They enter it.

The work was forged in a week-long POC-only atelier at Horst led by Fallon Mayanja. Using voice, improvisation, oral archives, and experimental sound practice, each performer developed their own vocal presence — individual layers that gradually lock into a shared, living sound field.

HYMN holds space for care, intensity, and collective attention. It positions sound not as backdrop or decoration, but as a medium that actively binds bodies, memories, and futures together.
